Premiering at this year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival, OddSock Theatre brings Mother Earth to Venue 152, Sanctuary at Paradise in Augustines from 17-22 August.

The journey of Mother Earth began ten years ago when writer Robert Barham started working on a new project, born out of his love of space, sci-fi, and musical theatre. As he developed the script he was inspired by musicals like Evita, Beauty and the Beast and Blood Brothers, as well as comedy duo Morecambe and Wise.

After a longer development period, with delays due to personal illness and the Covid pandemic, workshops began in 2024. Mother Earth was developed with the help of friends who had expressed interest in growing within the creative industry and were excited by the opportunity to develop new work. At this time Robert took his developing musical to Mo Serby, inviting her to direct alongside him, reuniting the creative duo following their last writer/director partnership in 2009, when the two took Psalms to Edinburgh Fringe. At this time the duo brought on Orla Bentley as Associate Producer and Grace Barham as Choreographer.

The team brought the workshopped piece to Robert and Mo's previous production company OddSock Theatre to set about bringing this unique new work to the stage.

OddSock Theatre was originally formed in 2001 with the premier of Archie, a musical on the early life of Cary Grant, that initially performed in Ickenham and toured to Bristol. Originally made up of six friends, all with backgrounds in production, the group developed a passion for theatre making.

After taking a break since their last Edinburgh show the group noticed a growing gap in opportunity for young people to access fringe performing, and decided to offer a new generation of young people the chance to develop their skills and passion for the artform. At our heart, OddSock Theatre strives to give opportunities to performers and musicians who are looking to take their artistic career to the next level, using the professional experience of its members to enrich and challenge our new community.

Community is at the heart of Mother Earth's story, and over the past year of writing, workshopping and rehearsing our new musical, we have been building a community of our own. A community of young aspiring theatre makers and performers who are passionate about this project.

We are proud to be able to offer many of our company the opportunity to make their debut at the Fringe, including our associate producer and choreographer, as well as a significant amount of the cast and band, for many of whom this will be the first production since studying before taking the first step in acting professionally.
